Meet November 2024’s Community Superhero: Sonya Banks

From a young age, Sonya Banks knew her purpose was to be a “helper.” Growing up as the only child of a single mother with an incurable illness, she saw firsthand the importance of care and compassion. Helpers tended to her mother, bringing comfort and quality to her life, and her mother gave back to others every chance she got. These experiences shaped Sonya’s drive to serve others.

Sonya’s plan for as long as she can remember was to be a police officer. Her favorite memories with her mom include piling onto the couch to watch police shows and crime dramas and imagining a future where she would protect her community. Though she didn’t end up with a badge – she’s proud to be a part of the Madison County Multidisciplinary Team, working right next door to and alongside investigators working to keep children in this community safe.

As the Clinical Supervisor at the National Children’s Advocacy Center, Sonya works with children who experience trauma and provides support to the therapists on the team. She says the job is both rewarding and challenging – but knowing she’s helping a child have a brighter, happier future helps her on those challenging days. “You think you know resilience,” Sonya reflects, “but then you see the kids here.”

Sonya looks forward to helping more children in the coming year and expanding the Handle With Care Program. Handle With Care allows emergency responders to alert school counselors if a child has a potentially traumatic experience. She believes a single, compassionate connection can change a child’s life. “Being a little spot in their journey is the best part of this job,” she says.

Sonya’s calm and reassuring presence transforms the lives of children facing chaos, and her steadfast commitment to their well-being is her true superpower. To those she helps, Sonya isn’t just a helper—she’s a superhero.
